Country Name

The official name of the country is Barbados.

Location

Is an island country in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean region of North America.

It is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic and 100 km east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea, about 168 km east of both the countries of Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and 400 km north-east of Trinidad and Tobago, and about 265 kilometers north-east of the coast of Venezuela.

Capital

Bridgetown.

Reason for Naming the country

Barbados was originally named Los Barbados in Spanish, which means "the bearded ones", "bearded" refers to the long, hanging roots of the bearded fig tree, indigenous to the island, or to the allegedly bearded Caribs once inhabiting the island, or, more fancifully, to a visual impression of a beard formed by the sea foam that sprays over the outlying reefs.

Flag

The Barbados flag was officially adopted on November 30, 1966, the flag consists of three colors: Blue, Yellow, and Black.

There are different explanations of the symbolism of the Barbadian flag.

1- One explanation is that: the broken trident signifies the breakaway from England, and the three points of the trident represent the three principles of democracy - the government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

2- Another explanation is that: the trident represents the sea god Neptune and shows the significance of -the sea to the nation of Barbados.

3- Another explanation is that the stripes signify the golden sand around the island and the blue sea that surrounds the island.

4- Other suggestions explain that the blue on the left represents the sky, the gold in the middle represents sand, and the blue to the right represents the blue sea. The broken trident appears on the national flag and the coat of arms.

Language

English is the official language of Barbados, but not exactly the same as, those British English. An English-based creole language, referred to locally as Bajan, is spoken by most Barbadians in everyday life, especially in informal settings.

Religion

Approximately 95% of the population of Barbados are Christians, most Barbadians of African and European descent are Christians, and the large majority of these practice Protestant and Anglicanism with Roman Catholics accounting for a small part of the Christian population. Some of the other religions practiced in the country include Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Wicca, and Bahá’í. A significant number of Barbadians (about 20.6%) do not claim to adhere to any of the religions.

Currency

Barbadian dollar ($) (BBD).

Time Zone

-04:00 GMT.

Government Regime

Parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy.

Climate

The climate is mild tropical, with a rainy season between June and November and a drier season between December and May. In Barbados, the weather is hot and humid all year round, a bit cooler and more pleasant from December to April, and more hot and muggy from May to October. However, the heat is tempered by the breezes. The temperature does not vary much throughout the year. The best time to travel to Barbados is from February to April since it is the least rainy of the year, but after all, also December and January are acceptable months, with a few more showers. In May, heat and moisture increase, but the rains are still not too abundant, and it's still out of the hurricane season.
