Belize and former British Honduras.



Location

Belize is located on the North American continent, in Central America.

Bordered from the north by Mexico and from the south and west by

Guatemala and from the east by the Caribbean sea.



Capital

Belmopan.



Reason for Naming the country

Previously, Belize was called "British Honduras". The current name is inspired by the name of the old capital.


Flag

The Flag of Belize was adopted on September 21, 1981.

The flag of Belize consists of a blue background with a thin red horizontal stripe on the top and bottom of the flag. In the middle of the Belize flag is a circular white base with an emblem. In the center of the white circle, there is a coat of arms, On the left of the coat of arms, there is a man holding an ax, and on the right side, another man is holding an oar.

Above the coat of arms, there is a tree, and below it is Belize's motto.

On the white circle is an inner green circle consisting of 50 olive leaves which represent the year 1950, when Belize began its journey toward independence from Britain.

The red, white and blue Belize Flag is a symbol of the unity of the nation.

Blue represents the People's United Party (PUP), which led the nation to independence, Red stands for the United Democratic Party (UDP), a national party of Belize.



Language

English is the official language of Belize - a former British colony - the primary language of public education. Spanish is the mother tongue of more than 50% of the population and is taught in schools. Most of the Belizeans speak Spanish but also speak English and Creole.




Religion

Christianity is the most widespread religion in the country of Belize. The percentage of Christians in the state of Belize is about 87% of the total population. There are a number of people who believe in Catholics and Protestants. A small part of the population believes in the Islamic faith, and there is a small part of Judaism.

Climate

The country's tropical climate is very hot and humid throughout the year and the rainy season is between February and May. In Belize, the climate is tropical, with a hot and rainy season from June to October, and a cooler season from November to February. During December, January, and February, the average temperature is around 23/25 °C. From June to October, the daily average temperatures are around 27/28 °C, with highs around 30/32 °C. The best time to visit Belize is from February to April when the rains are rare, and the heat is not humid.
