Country Name

North Korea, or officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Location

North Korea is a country in East Asia constituting the northern part of the Korean Peninsula.

The country is bordered to the north by China and by Russia along the Amnok (known as the Yalu in Chinese) and Tumen rivers, and to the south by South Korea.

Capital

Pyongyang.

Reason for Naming

The name Korea derives from the name Goryeo (also spelled Koryŏ). The name Goryeo itself was first used by the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo (Koguryŏ) which was one of the great powers in East Asia during its time, ruling most of the Korean Peninsula, Manchuria, parts of the Russian Far East, and parts of Inner Mongolia, under Gwanggaeto the Great.

Flag

The flag was introduced on 10 July 1948 and adopted on 8 September 1948.

The flag consists of a wide red stripe at the center, bordered by a narrow white stripe both above and below, followed by a blue stripe.

The central red stripe carries a five-pointed red star within a white circle near the hoist.

The red color represents the bloodshed during the socialist revolution or patriotism, the blue color represents peace, and the white color represents purity and chastity.

Language

Korean is the Official and Most Widely Spoken Language of Korea.

Religion

Officially, North Korea is an atheist state. There are no known official statistics on religions in North Korea. According to Religious Intelligence, most f the population is irreligious, other minorities practice Korean shamanism, Chondoism, Buddhism, and Christianity.

Climate

In North Korea, the climate is continental, with freezing sunny winters and hot rainy summers. The country is affected by the monsoon circulation: during winter, the cold northwest wind of Siberian origin prevails, while in summer, it is replaced by southern currents of tropical origin. This explains the precipitation regime of North Korea, which, for example, is opposite to that of the Mediterranean.

The driest months are those of winter, while the highest amount of rainfall is recorded in July and August. Considering the winter cold as well as the heat and the rains of summer, the best times to visit North Korea are spring and autumn, in particular, the months of May and October, though in October, it may already get cold in the northern mountainous and inland areas where June and September are preferable.
