Reason for Naming
The name Belarus is closely related to the term Belaya Rus "White Rus". There is a theory that suggests that the name was used to describe the part of old Ruthenian lands within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that had been populated mostly by early Christianized Slavs, as opposed to Black Ruthenia, which was predominantly inhabited by pagan Balts.
Flag
The first use of the current flag design was in 195, The Flag of Belarus was adopted on June 7, 1995, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The flag of the Republic of Belarus consists of two horizontal stripes of Red and Green colors with a white and red ornament pattern placed at the hoist side.
The Red color symbolizes the blood of defenders of the land of Belarus in the past, Green symbolizes the future, hope, spring, land, forests, and fields in the country, The decoration symbolizes the rich cultural heritage of Belarus and the unity of its people.
Language
Belarus's two official languages are Russian and Belarusian.
Russian is the most common language used at home, used by 70% of the population, while Belarusian, the official first language, is spoken at home by 23%.
Minorities also speak Polish, Ukrainian and Eastern Yiddish. Belarusian, although not as widely used as Russian, is the mother tongue of 53.2% of the population, whereas Russian is the mother tongue of only 41.5%.
Religion
Eastern Orthodox Christianity is the most common religion in Belarus, Orthodox religion is not the only religion in Belarus. Other religions practiced in the country include Roman Catholicism, various Protestant denominations, Neopaganism, Judaism, and Islam.
