The reason for naming the country

In 1822, the American Colonization Society purchased land in Africa to ship back the enslaved people from America to their home, First ship carried 86 settlers and moved them to West Africa. They became independent in 1847, and the name was given Liberia, derived from Liberty. In the honor of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, the capital city of Liberia was named Monrovia.

Flag

The Liberian flag was adopted on July 26, 1847, after gaining independence. The country was originally recognized as a colony of the USA. For this reason, the Liberian flag is very similar to the flag of the United States of America, the flag of Liberia consists of six red and five white horizontal stripes. In the top left-hand corner of the flag, there is a blue square that has a white five-pointed star in the center of it. The 11 stripes symbolize the 11 signatories of the Liberian declaration of independence. The red and white colors symbolize courage and moral excellence. The white star represents the freedom the ex-slaves were given, and the blue square represents the African mainland.
