Reason for Naming

The origin of name Nepal is derived from the Nepal Bhasa, which is the language of Newars, the natives of Kathmandu Valley, and has its origin in the fact that Kathmandu Valley used to be called Nepa, the term that is still used by Newars.

Flag

The flag of Nepal was adopted on 16 December 1962. It is made up of two red orthogonal triangles where one is placed on top of the other, both lined with a blue stripe.

The upper triangle bears a white silhouette of the moon and the lower triangle holds the symbol of the sun.

The combination of these two symbologies should represent the hope for

Nepalese independence to last as long as there are the sun and the moon.

The flag´s serrate shape also evokes the peaks of the Himalayas.

The red color of the background indicates energy, hardiness, and bravery.

The white color represents purity and innocence; and the blue color represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

the moon represents the royal family and its power, while the sun stands for the Rana family and political power.

Rainfall is plentiful in the period of the summer monsoon (June to early October), which, however, enters with difficulty in some sheltered inland valleys and on the northern slopes. On the southern slopes, at equal altitudes, the east is rainier than the west. The best time to visit Nepal in its entirety runs from November to February, to avoid the summer monsoon but also the heat of the plains, which is intense from March to October.
